After searching for hours, I came upon your video. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I have yet to get the small nut loose on top of the impeller but I am going to try the torque setting on my drill like an impact driver as you mentioned in another post. My dishwasher is a Kenmore model 15762 but it looks identical to this Whirlpool you used to demonstrate. Part cost less than $50.00 and if I had to buy a new dishwasher, I’d have to pay installation since pipes were sweated on the current one.

I don’t believe the screw is seized, because when I hold the impeller, the impeller does not move, but it feels like the motor is turning. The impeller stays in one place, but the screw keeps turning. It appears that whatever the screw goes into has broken loose, but not sure what or where that is.
January 30th, 2013 at 8:18 am
It sounds if the screw is siezed. Try using a reversing variable speed drill with an adjustable torque setting, place the correct size nut driver in the drill and set the torque setting about mid way and the impact action of the drill might possible break the screw loose and it may come out. The other option is having someone hold the wrench on the impeller and use both hands on the screw. Hope that helps. I’ll also email you this information.

I have a Whirlpool Du966pwkb0 dishwasher and it looks identically to the one you are working on. When I try to remove the screw, it appears to be turning even when I hold the impeller. Any thoughts on what is causing this?

OMG Thank you thank you thank you. I’ve spent the better part of the day looking for info that had the bottom washer and drain parts like my dishwasher. I happened on your video and VOILA there it was. You saved my dishwasher from my klutziness and 2 pennies…thank you

I’m having problems removing the center screw while holding the impeller still with the crescent wrench. The crescent wrench is digging in, creating some distortion in the plastic. Any ideas? Thanks. Bill C..

@iweuhierden I can look at your question in more detail but I’ll need the model number to give you more specific help. I’ll also send you an email with this information.

15 year old magic chef dishwasher that recently started making loud buzzing sound. Ive taken it out to inspect and i dont see anything out of the norm, but I also cant get the motor to come out. It has a little screw with a wingnut on the inside near where the impeller is located but the motor wont come out. Would I have to replace the motor and housing as all one unit? Id like to inspect the impeller but i cant get to it. Works great other than the loud buzzing sound. Water inlet not clogged.
January 30th, 2013 at 10:46 am
@tracker3 I would start with the water inlet valve and see if the filter is clogged with debris and if it’s not then it can be tested with a multi-tester to see if it’s working properly. I’ll email you a link to our site that will explain how to test it. If you need more specific help then please provide the dishwasher’s model number.

my dishwasher initially shoots water from center nozzle with force but immediately loses pressure and only dribbles out of nozzle and spray arm. The low pressure does not rotate the spray arm on the bottom of the tub. Would this be a water inlet valve issue or impeller?

@YsBigfoot That’s excellent news!
January 30th, 2013 at 12:13 pm
thank you this was just what I needed
January 30th, 2013 at 12:26 pm
@morrisdw155 Try using friction tape to hold the impeller in place and it should help you remove the center screw.

My impeller is stuck to the motor shaft on the same model in this video. Got any tips on how to free it?

@KnotHomeYet You’re welcome. Glad you found the video helpful.

You’re right. I noticed when I took apart my Kenmore (which has never been serviced and I purchased new), both balls were located together in the drain cover, *not* as they were in this video. The parts diagram also shows them installed this way.
This is otherwise a great video, and it was an excellent resource for me in understanding how to disassemble my dishwasher without breaking something. Thanks to partselect for creating and uploading this!

Hi Steve, My Whirlpool du943 dishwasher starts ok. But does nothing after that. It does occasionally make a small noise and I can see the steam coming out and after a while the display says that the cycle is complete. But the water remains in the bottom and dishes are not clean. Would replacing the drain & wash Impeller fix this problem? My dishwasher is almost 10 yrs old. So I am thinking if it’s better to replace than repair the machine. Thanks for the helpful videos!

@rvanpopta It sounds like the screw is stripped. There are a few things you can do. The first into is using rubber band. Put the band into the stripped screw, apply the screwdriver head into it, applying constant, yet gentle pressure and unscrew. The other is using a flat blade screw driver or using a hex key. I’ll also email you this information.

Hi Steve
I am currently trying to get the top impeller of but I am having difficulty removing the screw that holds it in. I keep the impeller from moving and I turn the screw but it just turns and turns. What do I do.
Reuben.

@sleighful The drain impeller is the required part. It is available as an impeller and seal kit with instructions. Looks like you can access from the top. Remove the plate beneath the wash impeller and then the filter cover below that. This should get you to the impeller and seal. I’ll also email you this information.

Steve, My impeller problem is lower than the wash impeller. I’m guessing its something like a pump impeller? How to remove the top to get to it is the question or do I need to remove the motor from beneath and do it that way? It shows up on the searsdirect parts site (searspartsdirectDOTcom/partsdirect/part-model/kitchenaid-parts/dishwasher-parts/Model-KUDS220T1/0593/0130000/O2004204/00005 ) as an Impeller with part #4163042, #36 on the diagram of Pump and Motor. Help!

Wow its not over yet but I had to say what a GREAT video. Nice guitar tune background too!. Thanks for taking the time. This unit is much diff. than my KA but basically seeing the pump housing coming off is key to getting to wash impeller on mine. Light, color, sound, installer is all PERFECT as it can be. NiCE job.

January 30th, 2013 at 11:01 pm
iam having the same problem but the bottom of my dishwasher isnt made like this one HELP
January 30th, 2013 at 11:08 pm
I have the same problem. My parents’ dishwasher doesn’t have a basket on the bottom at all… just the bottom with lots of little square holes with water over them since it won’t fully go down :/
January 30th, 2013 at 11:27 pm
What if the bottom of your dishwasher looks nothing like this one?
January 30th, 2013 at 11:40 pm
Thank you Sir..you’re really great! from Philippines
January 30th, 2013 at 11:45 pm
Thank you for the video help. I will try this. So tired of coming home from being out with standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher. A few times it had leaked all down the floor, ruined my wood-look floor, and ran down to the top of my clothes washer in the basement. It’s pretty scary that it might damage the floor so much and fall through.. Ha! Wouldn’t that be a scary sight:?

Get rid of the closed captioning. It is either too close, or covering the visual. it is highly annoying. i’m asking you to take this video down from the site. please remove the caption, or delete the video.
